A resting electrocardiogram (ECG) is a quick and painless test that records the electrical activity of the heart while the patient is at rest. Small sensors are placed on the chest, arms, and legs to measure heart rhythm and electrical conduction. A resting ECG can help detect arrhythmias, signs of previous heart damage, conduction abnormalities, or other cardiac conditions. The examination usually takes only a few minutes and is often part of a routine cardiac evaluation.
